Community Service

This committee will conduct a community analysis to learn what projects are needed most in the community. They will look at projects on the arts, business affairs, citizenship, civil improvement, community beautification, health, literacy, public affairs, safety or help for senior citizens and disabled persons. They will submit to the club's Board of Directors a list of projects that the committee would like to initiate for their approval. After projects have been selected, the committee will report the progress to the Board each month.  This committee is responsible for the concessions for Relay for Life.

Aktion Club

Our Aktion Club provides adults living with disabilities the opportunity to develop leadership and initiative, serve their community, be integrated into society, and demonstrate the dignity and value of citizens living with disabilities. Human and Spiritual Values
Chair: Marilyn Taylor

This committee recruits a member to pray or give an inspiring thought at the beginning of our weekly meetings. It also chooses a citizen from the local community for an annual Spiritual Values award. It oversees a budget from which grants are made to local religious congregations or other charitable organizations which in some manner serve the spiritual needs of the community. This committee also serves as the Sunshine Committee, which will assist members of the club during times of need and/or difficulty.  Such assistance can range from simple notes of availability, to coordinating the efforts between those who can help and the individual families involved.  The Sunshine Committee will send out greetings to those that are sick, for sympathy, a new baby, etc.

The committee suggests projects and programs to assist boys and girls, ages 6 to 21 years of age, to adjust to their environment and adapt to the social, economic, and moral demands they might encounter.  The committee develops means to assist on the guidance of youth in the selection of proper and suitable vocations, as well as other areas that the committee may deem pertinent.

Scholarships

This committee will award to a graduating senior from each of the local High Schools (Issaquah, Liberty and Tiger Mountain) a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 each to further their education. Applicant will have participated in school and community activities that demonstrate outstanding leadership as well as demonstrated academic success.

The Linda Ruehle endowed scholarship will be awarded to a senior at Issaquah High School in the amount of $2,000. Applicant will have participated in school and community activities that demonstrate leadership ability and will have a grade point average of from 2.5 to 3.4.

These scholarships will be granted in the above amounts, subject to the annual budget approval. After the student has been awarded the scholarship, the student (or students) will be invited to attend a Kiwanis meeting to thank the Club and to tell the Club how they plan to use the money.  The scholarship check will be written to include both the recipient’s name and the post-high school learning facility (trade school, community college, university, etc.)

The purpose of this committee is to ensure that the news of our club is broadcast to the largest audience and in as many media as possible.  The committee will be responsible for writing press releases promoting up-coming events, and publicizing the good done by the club.  The committee will take pictures at the Club’s meetings and special projects to post on the website and to accompany the press releases.

Programs

This committee is responsible for securing programs for each week, save the meeting following the Club Board meeting, which is reserved for Club business. Programs should reflect the broad interests of the Club’s membership and not serve commercial or partisan political interests.  The committee is responsible for notifying the speaker of the date, time and location of the meeting; securing a brief biography for use in introduction of the speaker; making arrangements for audio-visual equipment needed by the speaker, printing the certificate of appreciation and making the speaker feel welcome when they arrive at the club meeting.

Membership Committee devises ways of maintaining an adequate membership of citizens of good standing who are interested in a contribution to the community through service. The committee considers all proposals for membership and shall submit its recommendations to the Board of Directors. It should also devise a plan for the orientation, induction, and successful assimilation into the Club of new members and should promote regular attendance at Club meetings.

Nominating

In accordance with the Club By-laws and at least 5 weeks prior to the annual meeting, the President will appoint a Nominating Committee comprised of a Chairperson and at least four other members, three of which should be current member past presidents. This committee shall make nominations (with the consent of those nominated), prepare a ballot, and manage the election process for the election of officers or directors of the Club.

During the first week of April, the Nominating Committee will 1) meet and deliberate on and determine the best possible slate of officers for the coming year, 2) obtain the appropriate consent of each nominee, and 3) publish the slate to the Club membership (orally and in the Club meeting minutes) during each of the final two regular Club meetings of April. During each such meeting, any further nomination may be made from the floor provided it is specific and such further nominee has consented to being so nominated.

During the Annual Meeting, on or before May 15th, the Nominating Committee will conduct the election and provide the results to the President for publication to the membership.

Criteria for candidate selection shall include:

  • Years of membership and attendance
  • Evidenced special interest in Kiwanis [loyalty, service, other contribution(s)]
  • Leadership
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Energy / enthusiasm
  • Character / integrity

Committee consists of the President, Secretary and at least two other club members.  The committee will review the club policies and procedures on an annual basis and solicit the Club for any modifications.  Any changes will be presented at a Board meeting for approval as stated in Article VI.

The committee will also review the Kiwanis International Bylaws and PNW District Bylaws on an annual basis to determine if any changes will impact the Club Bylaws.  Any changes will be presented at a Board meeting for approval.  The Club Bylaws must be ratified each year whether or not any changes were made.

Audit

Audit Committee is nominated by the Board.  According to the Bylaws, the Treasurer and Secretary cannot be the auditors.  The auditors should be familiar with financial statements and should reconcile bank statements (if necessary) and conduct tests of income and expenditures for the past year.  The committee conducts annual review of the Community Service, Administrative and Gibson Hall Accounts and recording of funds received and disbursed.  A copy of the audit report shall be provided to the current Board and upon request, to any club member.

The Annual Kiwanis Auction is one of the major fund raising events put on by the members of the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah each year.  The Auction Chair and subcommittee are responsible for the selection of a location, establishment of a budget, planning, and organization of all functions in order to carry out a successful auction.

The Committee will recommend leasing fees for members and non-members for approval by the Board of Directors.  The committee chair has the authority to negotiate rates for the long-term leases subject to Board approval.  The committee is also responsible for maintaining Gibson Hall by ensuring it is kept clean and resolving any maintenance issues.  Subject to approval by the Board, the committee chair can hire/contract for maintenance work.  The policies for use of Gibson Hall are listed in the Gibson Hall policy notebook.

Flag

The Flag subcommittee will facilitate the displaying of the American Flag throughout the City of Issaquah on recognized holidays, voting days or any time the Club thinks the flags need to be flown.  The committee will contact old businesses and solicit new businesses that may be interested in the Kiwanis flags program.  The subcommittee will provide the names and addresses of customers to the Club Treasurer for the billing process.  The subcommittee will also repair all flags and dispose of old flags in the proper manner.

The Tent subcommittee will make arrangements to rent the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah’s tent to people in the community.  The subcommittee is responsible for the setting up and taking down of the tent.  The subcommittee is also responsible for getting the billing information to the Club Treasurer.

Concerts on the Green

The chair of Concerts on the Green will arrange for the Health Department permit, and recruit Club members to do the following:  clean BBQ’s and bring them to Lewis House at the Community Center, fill propane tanks, make a shopping list and provide an inventory after each week’s event; recruit members to set up, take down, prepare condiments, BBQ the food and serve customers; receive cash box from Treasurer and account for the evening’s proceeds.
